KPN Ventures Research Series: European digital healthcare investment landscape

We’re thrilled to give our latest updates: 🚀New investment in CloudTalk! 💰Follow-on investments in BOX ID, Wirepas and Minut! ✨Exciting news from other portfolio companies that have been shining bright! But first, have a seat and get comfortable, while we take you through our highlights:

Over the past years we have seen an increasing activity in investments and amounts in the Digital Healthcare market. The U.S. seems to be an early adopter, followed by Europe. We forecast that globally the investments and amounts will be again higher in 2018 compared to the years before. However, based on the market activity shown in the first half of 2018, we forecast that Europe’s investment activity will decline in 2018 compared to 2017.

Most Digital Healthcare investments take place in France, UK, Sweden and Germany, followed by Spain and the Netherlands. Although we have seen some large deals taken place over the past years in Europe, e.g. Pharmacy2U € 48M (UK), Doctolib € 64M (France), Babylon € 54M (UK), Ada € 40M (Germany), unfortunately no Dutch digital health scale-ups have been able to raise such large funding amounts. In the report we have also shown the most active investors in European companies and also the most active acquirers of European companies. Feel free to comment or to ask us questions about the market developments and the data.

So what has KPN Ventures been doing over the past 2 years in Digital Healthcare? In short:

KPN Ventures has invested in Personal MedSystems (Germany) and Sensara (the Netherlands). Personal MedSystems has developed a mobile ECG-reading solution (CardioSecur) via which people are able to do a clinically validated ECG’s anytime anywhere by means of their mobile device and also request assistance from medical professionals in case the smart algorithms detect unusual patterns in the ECG. KPN Health has created a partnership with Personal MedSystems, introducing the CardioSecur technology as part of its remote heart monitoring service to Dutch General Practitioners and their patients. This project has been nominated for a Computable Award.

Sensara has developed a smart monitoring solution for in elderly homes. Sensara monitors via sensors lifestyle patterns of elderly people, being able to provide care-takers with detailed insights about the health and real-time situation of the person. Did Sara get out of the bed on time this morning? Sensara is partnering with KPN Health to pilot the solution with several municipalities and home-care institutions in the Netherlands. This project has been nominated as finalist for the European Silver Economy Awards.
